ABOUT US

NE GA News is about goings on in a small town. But it is more. It is commentary about goings on in, well, wherever things are going on.

You won't learn much here…. at least not much that the "world" (aka the "media') THINKS is important. We are not here to "market" the news. Our opinions are ours. Buying in to them whole hog may be dangerous. Consume with caution

NE GA NEWS started as an idea. ("Dream" is a bit dramatic.) Two things brought it about. First, print news about our hometown declined (almost disappeared) when the local paper "folded". Folks hereabouts were CLAMORING for news about our town. There was a groundswell of citizens (at least three people) pleading with me to start a newspaper.

My public must be served.

Second, we felt that our weekly column, which continued to appear in another small-town paper, might get greater exposure over the internet.

So here we are. Our opinion page title? FROM THE BENCH? Well, that's another story.

Almost every small town in the south has a bench right downtown where some of the locals sit around to talk, scratch, doze, or just look. There may not be much knowledge imparted, but there's lots of commentary. That's where the title comes from, and you're invited to listen in.

Later, perhaps, we'll let you join in, but right now we want to stay provincial. (That's a nice way of saying to newcomers, "Mind your own business. This is our town, and if we want your opinion, we'll give it to you.")

Our town is Royston, Georgia, and if you look real hard in the northeast part of the state, you MAY find us. Our main claim to fame is Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach. I haven't checked, but I think it's against the law around here to write, "Royston, Georgia," without including, "home of baseball's immortal Ty Cobb.".

Ty was the first player inducted into the major league baseball Hall of Fame. That was in 1935, and not much has happened here since then, but that's the way we like it.

We have one main bench downtown, but there are several more scattered about, all of them with the name of Cobb, or Tony Jones, painted on the back.

If you're wondering who Tony Jones is, so did I when I moved here in '98 (that's 1998, not 1898). Tony is a huge man who grew up (and up and up) in Royston and went on to become an all-pro NFL lineman with the Denver Broncos. (He has a super bowl ring to prove it.)

Unlike Cobb, who rests in the only mausoleum in Rose Hill Cemetery, Tony Jones is still very much alive, and still playing football at last check.

So, if you have nothing better to do (if true, you should be ashamed), sit back, relax, and visit with us. Glad to have you.
