From the Bench

WEDNESDAY MORNING…EARLY
SEPTEMBER 11-----EARLY MORNING ON RAILROAD STREET

The day dawned bright and sunny, with a brisk hint of fall in the early morning. It is Wednesday…..for most people just a half workday. Yesterday was the election runoff, but few remembered. Not much happened. Just leftovers.

The newspapers, and the radio, and the TV didn’t say much about the election. They’re too busy talking about the "High Alert" and trying to relive last year at this time.

The local Chamber is chiming in to do its part. There will be a commemoration, or remembrance, or whatever you want to call it up at the football stadium this evening. Bands, choirs, cheerleaders, public officials, glo-sticks, candles.

All the "veterans" and "heroes" of the wars (many of whom probably never got any nearer combat than a New Orleans cathouse) will march around the football field.

Then somebody will sing a patriotic song, and, about dark, they will end up with fireworks.

Sounds more like a celebration than a memorial. Somehow it doesn’t seem right. Guess I’m just out of step.

But I suppose I will cover it and get some pictures. Write a story. Maybe I’ll change my mind after I go, and write something patriotic.

Right now, though, I’m just going to the park to sit in the gazebo for a while. It’s quiet and gives you time to think while the morning’s still cool. And there’s a lot to think about.
