The Associated Press filed a disturbing report this week. The inspector generals
office has discovered that 775 firearms and more than 400 computers are missing
and unaccounted for by two federal agencies.
What is more disturbing is the agencies involved
two of our premier
law-enforcement agencies, the FBI and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
What is most disturbing is the revelation that some of the computers contained
classified and sensitive information, information that could be useful to
terrorist or subversive organizations.
This comes at a time when the government is moving full speed ahead
(government speed) to combat terrorism in the homeland. Airline inspectors
have been federalized, with questionable results.
A new Homeland Security Agency has been established, with bi-partisan support.
Instead of cracking skulls with the FBI, CIA, INS, Border Patrol, and other
federal fiefdoms to force them to work together, both parties, and the president,
wussed out. A new fiefdom, with potential for a massive number of government
workers will now join the family feud.
Why so many people think that passing a law will solve a lot of problems is
beyond me. We already have enough laws which, if enforced and supported by
the judiciary, would last for years; however, our legislators, both state
and federal, come to us at election time boasting of the legislation they
got passed.
Isnt it time to elect people who go to Atlanta and Washington and do
nothing? This is not as far-fetched as it seems at first blush.
Think about it. No more laws to restrict your freedom. No more rules to complicate
your life more than they have already done. No more giveaways for growing
corn, hogs,
..or babies. No more tax
cuts or reforms that seem to help everybody but you. Best
of all, no more lawyers. So long as the laws keep growing, so will the number
of lawyers.
And Ive saved the best (or most confusing) for last. If there are no
laws or budget bills, there is nothing for congress to NOT vote on in order
to get a pay increase. HUH?
Yes, its true. Congress passed legislation some ten years back that
AUTOMATICALLY gives them a raise unless they vote against it. Only in congress.
With that track record, wouldnt you feel more comfortable if congress
passed some strong gun control legislation? You wouldnt? Well, neither
would I.
Furthermore, I dont need Charlton Heston or a Supreme Court justice
to interpret the second amendment. It is very clear. Listen to the second
part. (despite what some argue, the first part is not germane):
the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not
be infringed.
(Def.) infringe: to violate or go beyond the limits of (a law, for example);
to encroach upon something, example, a law that infringed on ones property
rights.
In closing, this may seem insensitive. If so, I apologize.
I am as sorry as hell, Mrs. Brady, for what happened to your husband; however,
I do not believe that strong gun control legislation would have stopped a
determined nut from shooting him, especially with the track record our federal
law enforcement people have displayed in the past.
