My daughter called by cellphone on her way back to Columbia from the Charlotte
airport. Her guests, a woman and her two young children, "trying"
to return to California, were detained by Northwest Airline’s security.
They had come east without incident; however, they missed their flight back, and ended up returning by way of Detroit, several hours late, thanks to vigilant airport security workers. They found a minor discrepancy between the name on the ticket and other identification. One read "Elisa", the other "Lisa". What a difference an "E" makes.
I have a great idea. Put those enthusiastic airport screeners along our borders to staunch the flow of illegal immigrants flooding the country. We DO want to stop them, don’t we?
Don’t kid yourself.
You see, the government doesn’t WANT to cut off the flow of cheap labor to the carpet, poultry, agriculture, and construction industries. The wealthy titans in those industries, who fill the coffers of incumbent politicians with campaign dollars, would scream to high heaven.
So, let’s stop this charade of "Homeland Security" which has done nothing but create a new federal bureaucracy. "Homeland Security" starts and stops at the balance sheets of the rich, whether it involves oil or chickens. Those of us not in on the gravy train, especially our low wage earners, will just have to endure it….and fight their wars when they start them.
Meanwhile, the TV ads of incumbents will convince most of us that we have the best "public servants" money can buy.

PS: Today’s AJC business page has the headline: "Airlines’ Outlook Worsens". A quick look at Northwest Airline’s performance shows that the airline lost ninety-three million dollars the latest quarter. Seems like nobody wants to fly anymore. I wonder why?
