WHY I AM RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL

Before getting into the "why", I need to provide a little personal resume, since I was not born and raised here:

Born: Chattanooga, Tennessee, June 17, 1930

University of Chattanooga, grad. 1955

Military: U. S. Air Force (Korean War) 1950-53

Employment (Engineer):

Western Electric, Chicago 1955-56
Southern Bell (now BellSouth), Atlanta, 1957-1987
6R Communications, Decatur, 1988-91

Married: Anne Martin, 1959-present

Family: Three children, seven grandchildren

Religious Affiliation: First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates, 1961-present

Resident of Royston, Georgia, since November, 1998

Now for why I am running.

Politics has a bad name, much of it deserved. That is why a lot of people do not want to get involved. Yet it is a necessary "evil", if you will. Democracy could not exist without it.Since I have always been interested in what is going on around me, I suppose it was almost inevitable that I would eventually run for office. I have no illusions that I have all the answers, or that I am necessarily the best person for the job; however, I do feel that I am well qualified to serve. I have attended most council meetings, and many County Commission and school board meetings since I have been a resident of the county. I continue to serve as an active member of the Royston Downtown Development Authority and the city Planning and Zoning Board. Currently I am involved, along with Bill Stewart and Don Kelemen, as Royston's members of the Georgia RDC, preparing the new (mandated by law) ten-year plan for Northeast Georgia. Some things I would like to see accomplished are:

  • An added impetus to reviving downtown,
  • Improving the appearance of the city
  • Exploring ideas to attract more business to the area
  • Getting the community more involved in becoming a part of the process.

  • These may just sound like fancy words by a would-be politician, but at least they are ideas toward setting a new direction to revitalize our city. And everything starts with an idea. That is why I am running, not against anyone or anything, but for what I fervently believe in.

MY MOTTO: I WILL KISS YOUR BABY, BUT NOT YOUR BUTT.

Registration Deadline: October 11 Election: November 8
