WILL REPUBLICAN MONEY DEFEAT ALAN POWELL?
A drunken sailor could learn a thing or two from the Georgia Republican party when it comes to spending campaign money. Voters here in the 29th House District (primarily Hart, Franklin, and Madison Counties) have seen it in a flood of brightly-colored, glossy brochures.
These have come from the Republican Party in Atlanta, aimed at defeating Democratic incumbent Alan Powell.
There are estimates that more than ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND Republican dollars have been spent so far on the campaign of Powell's opponent, the reverend Mike Griffin, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Hart County.
Republican interest in the 29th House district does not stop with money. In an unprecedented move, they brought the big guns to the table. The Speaker of the Georgia House, Glenn Richardson, made joint appearances with Griffin in Hartwell and Franklin Springs recently. He threatening that if we didn't elect his boy (Griffin), we wouldn't see him (Richardson) again.
Furthermore, Richardson dangled the lifeblood of politics under the noses of his audiences....PORK...saying we wouldn't see any of that, either.
(And you thought Tom Murphy's spirit died when the Republicans took over.)
Is the 29th District of the Georgia House of Representatives on the auction block? We hope not.
If WE are for sale...if our district can be bought by threats, cheap tricks, promises of pork, and hypocrisy, then we deserve what we get.
